Research to Practice April 2022: Community Conversations to Address School-Community Partnerships

"Using Community Conversations to Address School Community Partnerships for Youth Employment"

Effective school partnerships are crucial for supporting youth with disabilities to transition to adulthood. Although the importance of strong school-community collaboration is widely advocated, many school districts still struggle to establish transition partnerships within and beyond their school walls. In this webinar, we will discuss the application of “community conversation” events as a pathway for convening local communities to reflect on and strengthen their existing transition partnerships for supporting employment and other postsecondary outcomes for youth with disabilities. We will present our work supporting school districts in hosting events that engaged local citizens in constructive dialogue about enhancing school-employer-community partnerships. We will discuss the collective recommendations generated across these districts for developing or deepening partnerships and data gathered on the strength of these districts’ current transition partnerships. We will then offer recommendations for practice and policy, as well as resources to support districts in hosting their own community conversation events.
